Ancient Ithomi

Ithomi was an ancient fort in the area of Messinia

The fort consisted of fortified Repeated peaks and saddles . Preserved remains of the fortification . Was fortified by the southern access to the citadel . The highest peak (height about 800 meters ) , is currently the old monastery of Panagia Voulkanou . The parking area is fairly smooth and extended so it could be inhabited , though only in exceptionally difficult circumstances because of inaccessibility (for the same reason and abandoned the old monastery Voulkanou later ) . On the path to the top of Ithomis been observed aqueduct ruins and carvings in the rock , perhaps there was a fountain Hourglass mentioned by Pausanias ( others claim that the hourglass is the current media source in Mavromati ) .

The mountain was dedicated to Zeus Ithomata , and on top there was a shrine with altar . Pausanias mentions that the Messenians claimed birth and upbringing of Zeus in their place and that the source Hourglass water brought daily to the sacred peak . It has become reason for the similarity of the cult of Zeus Ithomata this Lycaon the Arcadian Zeus. This similarity is reminiscent of the incident mentioned by Clement of Alexandria , namely human sacrifice Lacedaemonians 300 prisoners , including the king Theopompus , the Messinian Aristomenes revolutionary hero , during the Second Messenian War.

The fort Ithome played an important role in the First Messenian War, in the late 7th century BC, between Messenia and Sparta. It was the last stronghold of the Messenians and finally leveled after heroic siege.

The next few years Ithomi held symbolic role in the heart of enslaved Messenians . So when the helots revolted in 468 BC ( C Messenian War ) , took refuge again in this place , rebuilt fortifications and resisted from there for a long time. Gradually , the Spartans tightened the noose around Ithomi and , with great difficulty and the help of allies , helots forced to capitulate , probably in 459 BC Under the terms of the Treaty , the besieged Messenian helots free fled with their families from the Peloponnese and settled by the Athenians at Lepanto .
