Ancient Messene was built in 369 BC

The southwestern part of the Peloponnese, near the present village Mavromati in antiquity was the city of Messina, the most important ancient cities of the region with significant historical presence. The city was founded in 369 BC the Theban general Epaminondas and Argos allies, in order to exclude the Spartans from the region of Messinia.

 

 

The specific location for the establishment of the new town is said to have chosen after the miraculous discovery of the point where the covenant was Aristomenes , Messenian hero , which was mediated by priests and seers . According to Pausanias , the colonization of the new town were invited back Messenians immigrants in Italy , Sicily , the Evesperides in Libya , and in several other cities where they had taken refuge . Ancient Messene was surrounded by a wall of about 9.5 km in length , most of which stands until today . It included two gates , the Arcadian (or gate Megalopolis ) and Laconia . The latter was destroyed in the 18th century , but the first , the Arcadian , in a fairly good condition , and indeed was the hallmark of the city for the first travelers, who used to reflect on the etchings . It is a massive , imposing gate , circular , with two entrances, one indoor and one outdoor . In ancient Messina have also come to light in the theater , the Agora , sanctuaries of Demeter and the Dioscuri , Zeus Saviour and Isis and Sarapis , the shrine of a hero , the mighty fountain Arsinoe , a large Doric temple , Asclepius , which was the brightest public building , the Ekklesiasterion , reminiscent somehow small theater , stadium , high school , and from later times , an early Byzantine basilica of years .

 

The layout of the city followed the so-called Hippodameian system , where all the buildings have the same orientation and the space is divided into horizontal and vertical axes . Instigator of this system was Hippodamus Miletus , architect , surveyor , planner and astronomer who lived around the 5th century BC , who supported his system at the beginning of egalitarianism , equality before the law and equal shares , which were the principles of democratic polity . The city fell victim invasion of the Goths in 395 AD under Alaric , when it began gradually deserted . It never ceases certainly be one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world and one of the most interesting archaeological destinations .
